With Easter around the corner, I’ve been thinking about what to put in the baskets this year. In the past few years, we have mostly stuck to edible and healthy treats such as fruit and nuts, but now that Dominik is four, I wanted to include some fun little gifts that reflected the changing of the seasons.
Most Easter baskets, or at least the ones I grew up with, are filled with an assortment of unhealthy and not very earth friendly trinkets. The plastic “grass” that lines the bottom not only gets everywhere, it’s terrible for the environment. Add in some plastic eggs, cheap plastic toys, and a whole lot of individually packaged candy.
There’s no need to fear, an eco-friendly Easter basket doesn’t have to be boring at all.
Let’s start with the basket and “grass”. For a basket, it can be as easy and cheap as finding one at Goodwill or any secondhand store, they are super easy to find. Or, you can stick to a fair trade, all natural basket that will last through many Easters and can be reused. This handmade Bolga basket is a great option. For the “grass”, it’s easily replaced with something like some scarves found around the house. We use these rainbow play scarves to line our basket.
For the goodies inside the basket, secondhand books and naturally made toys are best. Here are some of our favorite books, gifts, and toys:
For snacks and treats, we fill small mason/jam jars with berries, dried fruit, nuts, and seeds and that was not only really pretty, it was a huge hit. Some Fair Trade Chocolate would be great too!
