The Karner Blue Butterfly is an endangered species in states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, new Jersey, new York, and new Hampshire. They depend on the blue lupine flower, though there seem to be other factors such as a symbiotic relationship with ants.
The biggest threat to this butterfly is the destruction and change of habitat. They generally stay quite close to where they hatched, so when blue lupine is eradicated in an area or pesticides affect it, they cannot survive. Efforts are underway to remove dominating vegetation and replant blue lupine.
